At The Saplings Preschool we teach the children letter sounds using the Read, Write Inc scheme (RWI) to give your child the best possible start with their literacy.

Read Write Inc, developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy.

What is the Read Write Inc scheme?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed, so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7.

RWI is taught in The Saplings the term before children are due to start school.

Each day, the children learn a new sound and review previous sounds and words they have already learnt.

When RWI begins the children will take home a green booklet with all the sounds they will be learning, so they can practice them at home.

There is a link in the booklet to help you and your child to say the ‘pure’ sounds at home.

Fred Frog is a fun character who can say and read words only in pure sounds.

Once the children are familiar with all the ‘set one’ sounds from their green book, the children who are able to blend sounds together, may have the opportunity to begin reading the first ‘ditty’ books from the RWI Scheme.

Further details for The Firs Lower School's RWI Scheme can be found in the 'Our Learning' section, for easy access please click this Read Write Inc link.
