British Values & our value for the month
To further support our School Values and our promotion of 'British Values', we think about and celebrate one of our 22 values each month, often linking them with different events and festivals, both locally and around the world.
We look at the value in assembly and in class and we aim to ‘live’ that value in the way we work with others in school.
In April 2025 our value is... Freedom
In school, we have explained to the children that freedom is about having choice. They should use their freedom wisely - choosing without being influenced by their peers, and making choices that don’t hurt others.
We are asking parents/carers at home to send in a note if they think their child has demonstrated freedom, describing how they showed this value. We will celebrate some of their achievements in assembly (if they are happy with this). Examples of using freedom wisely, might be:
-
Making a choice that is true to them/making the right choices - even though friends may be making different choices.
-
Considering the feelings of others when making choices, e.g. ‘I chose the game we are playing, but I won’t take advantage of this - I won’t boss everyone about or treat them badly. I will let others have a turn.’
-
Respecting the right of others to be free and wanting others to be free to make their own choices in life.
-
Using free speech wisely – taking care to use kind words, so they don’t upset other people.
What people have said about freedom:
- Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. George Orwell
- Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought. Pope John Paul II
- Freedom means the opportunity to be what we never thought we would be. Daniel J. Boorstin
- For every man who lives without freedom, the rest of us must face the guilt. Lillian Hellman
- Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement. Nelson Mandela
- Human beings have the right to pursue happiness and live in peace and freedom. The Dalai Lama
