Black History Month at The Firs Lower
A wonderful opportunity for our pupils to celebrate diversity, reflect on history, and recognise the importance of equality and kindness in our world today.
Throughout October, pupils across [School Name] have been taking part in a wide range of activities to mark Black History Month. Each year group explored inspiring stories and important figures, deepening their understanding of equality, perseverance, and the impact of Black individuals throughout history.
Year 4 – Learning about Mary Seacole
Year 4 were fascinated to learn about Mary Seacole, a pioneering nurse who cared for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. The children discussed how she overcame racism and challenging conditions, showing great determination and compassion in her work.
Year 3 – Celebrating Scientists and Change-Makers
In Year 3, pupils researched significant people in history and created fact files about George Washington Carver, the scientist known for developing crop rotation methods still used today. They also explored the modern-day impact of Marcus Rashford, learning about his efforts to support children and families across the UK.
Year 2 – Learning from Courage and Equality
Year 2 spent time learning about iconic figures such as Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela. The children were especially inspired by Rosa Parks’ bravery in standing up for her rights and how her actions helped spark real change in America.
Year 1 – Sharing Dreams for the Future
Year 1 watched a video about Martin Luther King Jr. and then enjoyed a circle-time discussion where they shared their own dreams for the future. Their thoughtful responses included hopes to look after animals, help family members, be kind to others, and stop pollution — showing how Dr. King’s message still inspires young minds today.
Year R – Meeting Everyday Heroes
In Reception, the children read My First Heroes: Black History and watched Princess K’s Black History Heroes on CBeebies. They enjoyed learning about a variety of heroes, including Rosa Parks, Stormzy, and Nelson Mandela, and reflected on what makes someone an inspiration.
A Joyful Celebration
We concluded the month with a lively and thought-provoking assembly led by Mr Moses. Through music and storytelling, he explored links between The Lion King and African cultures, helping children to understand more about African traditions, values, and rites of passage.
Black History Month has been a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to celebrate diversity, reflect on history, and recognise the importance of equality and kindness in our world today.
